Puma at a glance.

Puma arrived as the aftermath between the Dassler brothers Rudolf and Adolf’s fallout. The two first founded the Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik (which eventually became Adidas as Adi Dassler took the reins). The Dassler footwear became popular in the Olympic Games as several athletes won gold; most notably American track and field legend Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics alone.

Come 1948, the Dassler brothers’ rift reached levels irremediable, resulting in a split in the business. Rudolf moved out and formed “Ruda”, while Adolf Dassler established Adidas Schuhfabrik. Rudolf Dassler replaced “Ruda” with “Puma” a few months later, thus the formation of another rivalry. This time in the footwear industry.

First set eyes on football, Puma launched the brand’s first football boot called “Atom”. By the 1950s, Puma was all-out in innovating football boots by releasing the Super Atom and Puma Brasil.

1958 saw the arrival of Puma’s iconic formstrip logo. The trademark was intended to stabilize the lateral stability but has since then become a signature detail on most footwear.

After many years of fame thanks to football and running, Puma entered the basketball market with the Puma Suede. Which eventually became the Puma Clyde signature shoe for NBA champion and Hall of Famer Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Puma also ventured into different sports including tennis.

The most popular Puma sneakers around are the Puma Suede, and any of the Puma RS (Running System) models. Jay Z is currently the brand’s creative director for basketball.

Artists Rihanna has her own collab with the brand from 2015 until 2017.

Rapper J.Cole also has his own signature basketball sneaker from Puma under the name Puma RS-Dreamer. The brand took a long hiatus from manufacturing basketball shoes, Puma revived the basketball line in 2018.

Currently, Puma is heavily active in promoting their sneakers both old and new, so expect thrilling things to come from this point going forward.
